Nathaniel Peabody Messer was born on April 3, 1941 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was employed as a newspaper printer for many years, first with the Houston Post, and then with the Houston Chronicle.

He was married, with five children.

Brother Messer received the degrees in Freemasonry from Jacques DeMolay Lodge No. 1390. He was initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason on April 24, 1967; passed to the degree of Fellowcraft on December 29, 1967; and raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on January 26, 1968. He served as Worshipful Master during the 1974-1975 masonic year. He was a dual member with West University Lodge No 1292, for which he also served as Worshipful Master.

Brother Messer was a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, having received the degrees from the Houston bodies in September 1981. For his service and devotion to the Rite, he was invested with the rank and decoration of a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour in 1989.

Brother Thompson passed away on September 30, 2003 at the age of sixty-two. He was laid to rest in Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.
